Gold's 1914 history, on printed p. 78 under the heading "BETHEL BAPTIST," says "Bethel Church was organized in the year 1808, with 13 members, most of them from the 'Buck Marsh' church, Berryville," that "In 1833 the present brick building was erected;" and, in the next entry, "MILLWOOD Was organized in 1888 by members of Bethel Church." What the source supportsThat Gold's text says Bethel Baptist was organized in 1808 mostly from the Buck Marsh church at Berryville, built a brick building in 1833, and that a Baptist church at Millwood was organized in 1888 by members of Bethel. UncertaintyGold's 1914 history is a retrospective county history; for this chapter the church histories were written by local contributors, and no vestry book, deed or register was read here. The page prints no place for Bethel, so its location is not established by this page. "Bethel Church," "Bethel Baptist" and "Old Bethel" are used for one congregation within the page. The Baptist church at "MILLWOOD" is a different body from Christ Church, Millwood. The crop begins with the tail of another church's entry (not Bethel's) and ends mid-sentence in the Salem entry, which is not used. Each cited passage was read twice, the second time independently: first as a rendered page image of a digital reproduction (a 300 dpi render of the stated PDF page), then on a cropped image of the same page. Both readings support the claim; neither was of the paper itself. The crop is held privately and is not shown on this site. Nothing beyond the quoted passage was read from the page.
