The People's Journal of June 1, 1910 printed a resolution of respect on the death of Sarah E. Mills by order of "Gideon's Tab. No. 14," signed by Cora B. Jones as ex-Scribe.

What the source supports

That a numbered tabernacle was active in 1910, with Cora B. Jones among its former officers.

Uncertainty

Read on the page image, page 2. The order the tabernacle belonged to is not stated. The paper's May 1913 issue records a woman who had joined "Galilean Fishermen Tabernacle No. 14" in 1896; whether that is Gideon's Tabernacle No. 14 is not established, and the two are not merged.

The same issue printed resolutions on the death of Sarah E. Mills by order of "Gideon's Tab. No. 14," which remembered her as "a member of the sick committee," and of "Rose of Sharn" (Rose of Sharon) Juvenile Tab. No. 61, which called her its "beloved sister and Guardian."

What the source supports

That two numbered tabernacles published resolutions on the death of Sarah E. Mills in 1910, one naming her place on a sick committee.

Uncertainty

Read on the page image in the site's viewer. The juvenile society's name is printed "Rose of Sharn Juvenils," "Rose of Sharn Juvenile" and "Rose of Sharm Juvenile" in the one resolution. The resolutions themselves do not say where she was buried; her obituary on the same page does. The order the tabernacles belonged to is not stated, and neither is tied here to the Gallean Fishermen Society beyond appearing beside her obituary.

The ground they kept: Milton Valley Cemetery

In 1909 the Clarke Courier credited forty-one Black men and women with forming the Milton Valley Cemetery Company in 1879 and buying three acres for a burial ground. A 1910 advertisement signed for the company, and a 1926 Cemetery Board notice printed under its heading, show lots offered, a monument raised and a yearly dollar asked of every lot holder, while a committee raised money for a walk in the cemetery. Funeral notices show the dead brought home from Cairo and Detroit, and by the 1930s the cemetery had its own Memorial Day exercises.

What the evidence says The 1909 Courier's account of forty-one founders in 1879, the company's 1910 advertisement and the 1926 board notice, read on the page images, show a Black-run cemetery company with stockholders, a monument and a yearly $1.00 charge on lot holders. Courier notices from 1897 to 1945 record burials there, including people brought home from Illinois and Detroit.
