Thomas M. Lippitt

The Clarke Courier of May 4, 1922 called Passed Assistant Surgeon Thomas M. Lippitt of the U. S. Navy "another Berryville boy" and recalled that he was wounded badly in the leg in the Boxer uprising. On June 1, 1922 the paper named a Dr. Thomas M. Lippitt, probably the same man, among the friends of Henry G. Shirley from the Summit Point section of Clarke and quoted his recollection of Shirley at school.

Is this the same man?

IDENTITY Likely Both Courier items of 1922 print Thomas M. Lippitt, the first as a Navy surgeon and the second as Dr.; nothing in either item links the two.

What distinguishes him: Name as printed in two Courier items of 1922: Passed Assistant Surgeon Thomas M. Lippitt, U. S. N., on May 4, and Dr. Thomas M. Lippitt on June 1.

Clarke connection: Birthplace in a newspaper recollection: the Courier of May 4, 1922 calls him "another Berryville boy" (C603). That is the paper's statement, not a birth record.

What the source supports

That Thomas M. Lippitt, a Berryville native, was a Navy surgeon wounded in the Boxer uprising, as the Courier recalled in 1922.

Uncertainty

Read from uncorrected OCR, not from the page image. The OCR garbles "Boxer" and the end of the May sentence. The items do not say where he lived in 1922. Reading the two items as one man rests on the matching name. He is not linked to any other Lippitt.
