Thomas D. Gold (Co. I, 2nd Virginia Infantry)

Thomas D. Gold enlisted at 16 in the Clarke company that became Company I, 2nd Virginia Infantry, by both his service cards and his 1915 obituary, which are probably the same man's. He was wounded at Second Manassas in 1862, captured near Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864, and held at Point Lookout and Elmira until 1865. The obituary says he served on the county board of supervisors and in the Virginia Senate, and published a history of Clarke County a little more than a year before he died at "Ellwood" in 1915.

Is this the same man?

IDENTITY Likely The obituary and the service cards agree on name, Company I and the Second Virginia Regiment; no card names Ellwood.

What distinguishes him: The obituary names Thomas Daniel Gold and says he enlisted in Company I, Second Virginia Regiment; the compiled service record cards name Thomas D. Gold (once "Gould", once "Thos. Gold", once T. D. Gold) in Co. I, 2nd Virginia Infantry, whose company the muster-roll footnote says was Capt. Bowen's Clarke Riflemen. No card names Ellwood or a family member, so the match rests on name, company and regiment: Likely, not Confirmed. This entry is kept separate from the collection's entry for the author of the 1914 county history.

Clarke connection: Residence and death in an obituary: the Winchester Evening Star of December 6, 1915 says he was born and reared at "Ellwood," in Clarke County, spent practically his entire life on that estate, died there and was buried in Green Hill Cemetery (claims C1364 and C1370); the 1861 muster-roll card of the compiled service record says "from Clarke County" and enrolment at Berryville (C1371), and the oath of parole has "Nr Berryville" in the margin (C1375).

This page rests on two or more independent records, each read on the page image.

What the source supports

What the Star's obituary says about where and when Thomas Daniel Gold died and when he was born.

Uncertainty

The obituary is the newspaper's own account, written the day of the report, and is not checked against any other record here. The report gives the day of the death only as "Saturday evening" and dates itself Dec. 6. It says he "was in the seventieth year of his age," which does not match February 23, 1845 to December 1915 by ordinary reckoning (age 70, in his 71st year); the paper's wording is kept as printed and not corrected. Each cited passage was read twice, the second time independently: first as a saved page or card image, then on a cropped image. Both readings support the claim; the crop is held privately and is not shown on this site. Nothing beyond the quoted passage was read from the page or card. What the Star's obituary says of Thomas Daniel Gold's wound at the second Manassas and his capture in May 1864.

Uncertainty

The obituary is the newspaper's own account, written the day of the report, and is not checked against any other record here. "Spottsylvania" is the paper's spelling, kept. Uncertainty

The obituary is the newspaper's own account, written the day of the report, and is not checked against any other record here. The cards read here do not repeat this route: one shows a parole sent from Elmira on Feb. 20, 1865 for exchange, another an oath of parole at Winchester on April 21st 1865, and none names Point Lookout. RECORD LikelyIDENTITY LikelyThe card names Thomas D. Gold, Sgt, Co. I, 2 Reg't Virginia Infantry. The obituary and this card agree on company and regiment, but no card names Ellwood.

What the source supports

What the 1862 muster-roll card says of Thomas D. Gold: a sergeant's rank in Co. I, and the remark on his appointment.

Uncertainty

The cards are the War Department's later abstracts, not the original rolls. No card read here names Ellwood or says that the man on it is the Thomas Daniel Gold of the 1915 obituary: the link rests on the name, Company I and the Second Virginia Regiment, and is labelled Likely, not Confirmed. The ordinal before "Sgt" is faint and read here as "6[th?]". The remark does not say what he was appointed to; the rank line says Sgt. The remark ends with a comma in the reading. Each cited passage was read twice, the second time independently: first as a saved page or card image, then on a cropped image. Both readings support the claim; the crop is held privately and is not shown on this site. Nothing beyond the quoted passage was read from the page or card. What the source supports

That a casualty-report abstract in the file lists a Thos. Gold of Co. I, 2d Va. Inf. as wounded in the Manassas battles of August 27 to 30, 1862.

The card gives the name as "Thos. Gold" with no middle initial, no rank, and does not say how or where he was wounded; another Gold in the company cannot be excluded from this card alone. The obituary's "desperately wounded" at the second Manassas is a separate statement. What the source supports

That a hospital-register card filed in the Thomas D. Gold file lists a Sgt., Co. I, admitted to the Charlottesville general hospital on Oct. 22, 1863 and returned to duty on Jan. 13, 1864.

Uncertainty

The card writes the regiment as "2d Regt. Va. Cav." and "2 Cav." (the editorial [sic] marks that it is kept as written) although the company, the captain and the other cards in this file are those of the 2nd Virginia Infantry; the contradiction is not resolved here. For this card alone, identity is Unconfirmed: it is filed in the service file headed Gold, Thomas D., Co. I, 2 Virginia Inf'y., gives the same name and company letter and Capt. O'Bannon (the captain the 1915 obituary names last for Co. I), but the regiment word it carries is the only place that word appears. The cards are the War Department's later abstracts, not the original registers. The disease is abbreviated in a faint hand ("Fe[b/v]. Typh[d]") and no expansion is on the card; the points after the days are as printed. The blank printed fields, the copyist's signature and the stamped number are not quoted.
