Column definitions are in schema.md. Machine-readable metadata is in datapackage.json. Every file in this directory, with its size and SHA-256, is listed in manifest.json.

Held fields

  • monument description: The book prints a monument's description once for every name on it; the page and this file give it once, at the burial place, not on every row.
  • OCR text, scan paths and page images: The release covers the facts of each record as printed, not the book's pages.

Row filters

Every row passed the download boundary's two filters before it was written: rows about a person who may be living are excluded, and rows whose state is unresolved (verify, lead, ambiguous and similar) are excluded. This publication excluded 0 rows as possibly living and 0 as unresolved at that boundary.

Reading the data

Names, dates and notes are printed as the book prints them and the scan read them. Nothing is corrected.

A blank death date, or the book's "no date", is not a statement that the person is living.

Two records sharing a name are not thereby the same person. same_name_and_death_date links only where the name and the death date both agree.

The page /cemeteries/ is the source of truth. A correction made there reaches this file at the next publication.

Schema: Cemeteries of Clarke County records

Dataset clarke-cemeteries-royston, version 1.0.0, published 2026-10-16. One row per record; the CSV and the "Records" sheet of the XLSX carry the same columns in the same order.

ColumnTypeDescription
record_idstringStable Our Clarke identifier for the record, the anchor of its card on /cemeteries/. Does not change between versions.
burial_placestringThe burial place heading as the book prints it.
burial_place_idstringStable Our Clarke identifier for the burial place.
book_partstringThe part of the book the record is in: Crampton inscriptions (from the Clarke County Historical Association's Proceedings), Royston surveys 2004, or Church register lists.
subsectionstringThe subsection heading the record sits under, as printed, where the book has one.
record_kindstringgrave, burial (from a register or list), marker (a stone with no name read), mention, lot owner, monument or plaque.
namestringThe name as printed. Empty when the book prints none or the scan garbled it (see withheld_fields).
birth_datestringBirth date text exactly as printed.
death_datestringDeath date text exactly as printed. "no date" is the book's own wording for a stone cut before a death; it says nothing about whether the person has since died.
burial_datestringBurial date text exactly as printed, mostly from church registers.
yearintegerYear read from death_date, or from burial_date when there is no death date. Empty when neither could be read. Never corrected.
agestringAge as printed.
lotstringLot or row as printed.
notesstringThe book's notes for a table row, verbatim. Relationship abbreviations (w/, s/, d/) are the book's; no relationship is derived from them.
entrystringThe whole entry as printed, for records the book prints as a line or paragraph rather than a table row.
burial_place_as_printedstringA burial place the record itself names, as printed (register lists name one per burial).
statusstringStatus as printed in a register list.
plaquestringThe plaque or memorial the name is on, as printed.
inscriptionstringInscription lines as printed, separated by " / ".
sources_citedstringThe sources the book cites for the record, separated by semicolons.
military_notestringyes when the record's notes name a war, a unit, a rank or a branch. A reading of the notes, not a service record.
withheld_fieldsstringSpace-separated fields not given because the scan garbled them. Look them up on the book page.
book_pageintegerPage of Royston (2005) the record is printed on.
record_urlurlThe record's card on /cemeteries/.
same_name_and_death_datestringSpace-separated links to a death-register entry, Green Hill Cemetery record or veterans roll row with the same name and a death date agreeing to the day or month. A link is a match on the record, not a proof of identity.

An empty cell means the value is not recorded in the source, or could not be read from it. It never means zero.
