Column definitions are in schema.md. Machine-readable metadata is in datapackage.json. Every file in this directory, with its size and SHA-256, is listed in manifest.json.

Held fields

  • status: Working notes on the project's own pages and release steps, not facts about the person.
  • recent_death_flag: A working note for the project's own family-sensitivity review of a death within ten years, not a fact about the person.
  • research notes, decision files and internal record codes: The citations column keeps each source as cited and removes the project's working paths, record codes and catalog numbers.

Row filters

Every row passed the download boundary's two filters before it was written: rows about a person who may be living are excluded, and rows whose state is unresolved (verify, lead, ambiguous and similar) are excluded. This publication excluded 0 rows as possibly living and 0 as unresolved at that boundary.

Reading the data

Each row is a lead from a named source, not a verified service record. A camp list, cemetery note or casualty card is not a service record, and one name may be two people or two names one person.

A blank birth or death field means no source used here gives one. It is not a statement that the person is living.

Spellings are the sources' own. name_variants lists the other forms found; a reading the sources disagree on is described in citations.

The page /veterans/ is the source of truth. A correction made there reaches this file at the next publication.

Schema: Clarke County veterans roll

Dataset clarke-veterans-roll, version 1.0.0, published 2026-10-12. One row per record; the CSV and the "Records" sheet of the XLSX carry the same columns in the same order.

ColumnTypeDescription
person_idstringStable Our Clarke identifier for the person on the roll. Does not change between versions.
namestringThe name as the roll shows it.
name_variantsstringOther spellings and forms of the name found in the sources, separated by semicolons.
warstringThe war the roll lists the person under: Colonial, Revolution, 1812, Mexican, Civil War, Spanish-American, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Other or "not stated".
wars_allstringEvery war the sources place the person in, separated by semicolons.
war_basisstringWhat the war rests on, in the words of the record behind it.
branch_unitstringBranch, unit, rank or company as the sources give it.
birth_yearstringBirth year where a source states it; sometimes a date. Empty when no source gives one, and always empty for a veteran who may be living.
death_date_or_yearstringDeath date or year where a source states it. Empty is not a statement that the person is living.
death_as_statedstringThe death, wound or casualty as the source words it, where one does.
burialstringBurial place where a source gives one.
clarke_basisstringWhy the person belongs on a Clarke County roll: the home, birth, death, burial or Clarke unit a source states.
deceased_basisstringWhy the person is taken to be deceased: a record of death, or the roll's rule for wars that ended in 1919 or earlier and for people born before 1916. Empty or "living or not known" for a veteran who may be living.
source_familiesstringThe kinds of source behind the row, as the codes the /veterans/ page uses, separated by commas.
sources_describedstringThe same source kinds in words, separated by semicolons.
citationsstringThe sources for the row as citations: title, date, page and what the source says, as recorded when each source was read. Separate passages are joined with a vertical bar.
green_hill_register_idstringThe row of the Green Hill Cemetery dataset (/data/#green-hill-cemetery) for this burial, where one row is certain.
page_urlurlThe person's own page on Our Clarke, where there is one.

An empty cell means the value is not recorded in the source, or could not be read from it. It never means zero.
